Advertisements (draft proposal sent to list)
Aerial photographs (already in LCGFT but needs BT Photographs)
Albums suggested by Maria, would need to be qualified (list discussion started) (relationship to Ephemera) (things like Postage stamp albums are hybrid terms and should be both Postage stamps and Albums)
Architectural drawings possibility for "designs and plans" - AAT = architectural drawings (visual works): Drawings of architecture and drawings for architectural projects, whether the project was executed or not. The term may also refer to any image in a two-dimensional medium that serves this same purpose, including prints and computer images.
Architectural manifestos LCSH sh2014002375 (see also manifestos below); maybe post-coordinated
Architectural pattern books should this be proposed or is architecture the subject and "pattern books" the g/f? draft proposal for Pattern books already sent to list
Art deferred to art project per 185/155 working group
Art and the war deferred to art project per 185/155 working group; is war the topic and should not be included in LCGFT? AAT has "military photographs" but not "military art" or "war art" or similar
Art reproductions primarily aimed at those who want to just say reproductions and don't care if it's a painting, watercolor, drawing, photograph, print; such as a library that lends such items
Artist files this was rejected for LCSH but maybe we'll try it as a genre/form candidate
Artists' books recommended by Kay (probably accepted by all with acclaim); considered by Literature group and passed on to art project (draft proposal sent to list)
Artists' illustrated books considered by Literature group and passed on to art project; also suggested by Maria
Audioguides BB; in AAT; could be in general?
Block books considered by Literature group and passed on to art project
Blog-based publications based on David Senior question on arlis-cpdg; BB wonders about not just books that have been printed of born-digital publications (e-flux, TripleCanopy), but also printed book works that contain content solely generated on the Internet/social media: see Craigslist Mirrors (Oglander) and Working on my Novel (Arcangel). Are they the same? Different?
Book jackets, Cover art Casey Mullin (MLA rep to SAC) got a note from a colleague about these and decided to pass it on to artgf
Book objects for those things which are both sculptural and artist books; suggested by Marie-Chantal
Boxes BB; TGM; AAT has "boxes (containers)"; include a NT for Boite-en-valise style editions and multiples
Brochures / exhibition brochures not on general list (tentative)
Buttons (information artifacts) BB; TGM & AAT both have qualifier
Cards suggested by Marie-Chantal but probably needs a qualifier; AAT has "cards (information artifacts)"; TGM has "Cards"
Catalogs on SAC G/F spreadsheet and General list: consider special forms of catalogs not there, e.g., Auction catalogs, Collection catalogs, Sales catalogs. What about: artist catalogs, architectural firm catalogs? Think about hybrids and post-coordination.
Collages M-C; in TGM
Collection catalogs
Coloring books considered by Literature group and passed on to art project (draft proposal sent to list; Janis says include British spellings like colouring)
Design drawings AAT = Drawings intended to work out the scheme of a project, whether the project is expected to be executed or not; more finished than sketches.
Designs and plans deferred to art project per 185/155 working group (list discussion started) - LC 260: $i subdivision |a Designs and plans |i under architectural headings, including types of buildings or rooms, for works containing architectural drawings, e.g. |aChurch architecture--Designs and plans; Theaters--Designs and plans - Liz notes that not all designs and plans are drawings.
Digital art M-C
Digital images this popped into my head but would anybody use it?
Drawings deferred to art project per 185/155 working group - NT Architectural drawings (or Technical drawings) - Renderings? too; probably not do "Ink drawings" and similar (parallel to Paintings)
Drone views
Environmental impact statements (this came up in some SAC meeting MW 2016 as a general term but maybe we can work it in; Adam didn't have proposal drafted; term in AAT, BT technial reports; RT historic structure reports)
Ephemera is on general terms list, do we want exhibition ephemera? see also artist files
Exhibition materials law group established "legislative materials" with UFs for some forms of materials but not all; also had "legislative materials" as BT for "legislative bills" and "legislative hearings" which they established as its own term; also "legislative histories" as RT; parallel for exhibition brochures, checklists, and some other miscellaneous types of materials
Festschriften this is not an art term but not in LCGFT yet (draft proposal sent to list)
Genre paintings if we use this term, it needs a clear scope note to distinguish it from genre/form as more broadly understood
Glaze recipes
Guides BB; in general list but quite specific to travel; can we add art-related UF or NT (depending) for terms like "Exhibition guides"?
Historic structure reports (see Environmental impact statements)
House plan pattern books "kit homes" is used in the Sears Modern Homes blog entry for Dec. 2, 2014
Illustrations deferred to art project per 185/155 working group
Installation photographs (mentioned by Liz; Janis says we can propose and get discussion) (not in AAT or TGM)
Invitations suggested by Maria (this could go in as a proposal since it's "general" rather than specifically art); with UF "announcements" or "exhibition announcements" ? BB
Landscapes (or should it be "Landscape paintings" and "Landscape drawings"; I think I've answered my own question; better to separate)
Mail art BB; AAT has "Works produced by artists, often in post card format, specifically when intended to be mailed to other artists or to be displayed in an exhibition; may be unique works or multiples."
Manga rejected by LC when presented by Literature group because "We're still not convinced that manga are a separate genre or form. Manga is a style of drawing in comic books, and in addition it means different things to different people." (from message from Alex Thurman, 5 December 2014)
Manifestos probably for general use and hierarchy but Futurists, Dadaists wrote 'em; NYU did LCSH proposal some time ago and it was rejected if we ever got around to submitting it; cf We Are Here and New World Academy reader #2 from BAK, at Bard CCS; there's actually a Wikipedia article on "art manifesto" ("An art manifesto is a public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of an artist or artistic movement. Manifestos are a standard feature of the various movements in the modernist avant-garde and are still written today. ...") American heritage dictionary gives plural as -oes or -os. LCSH sh2014002375 = Architectural manifestos. Literary manifestos was proposed by the Literature group and rejected by LC. But, strangely, Political manifestoes (Libby says that manifestoes is simply the older way of spelling it and since there are references, they don't see reason to change).
Mechanicals in AAT with references from paste-ups and pasteups (M-C)
Mixed media (Art) M-C; AAT has "mixed media" and a huge scope note
Models M-C; TGM has Models
Multiples BB; I am thinking of artists' multiples (NT?), which according to the scope notes in AAT, might not even fit here. Would "editions" be more appropriate?
Painted books considered by Literature group and passed on to art project
Paintings probably not have "Oil paintings" and similar; save "oil" etc for medium, but do "Watercolors" as NT - proposal sent to list, 26.iii.2016 sc
Pamphlets LCGFT has "Pamphlets (Ephemera)" listed as variant of "Tracts (Ephemera)"
Paper work (Art) M-C; LCSH has "Paper work" for art and "Paperwork (Office practice)"
Pattern books considered by Literature group and passed on to art project; do they mean architectural pattern books, e.g., house plan pattern books? (draft proposal sent to list)
Performing arts/performance art need some scoping; BB wants to help
Performance/video Kay asked on arlis-cpdg about "performance video works" and noted that "Video art" is listed as a NT of "Performance art" -- consider for genre heading; change LCSH relationship to RT
Performance documentation BB; could this be used to span both textual (scores), photographic and video documentation? (not in AAT, TGM)
Photobooks on General list; check to be sure it has made it through (term approved: http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026144)
Photographs SC draft proposal 31.iii.2016 needed for BT on Aerial photographs (what about subsets like Documentary photography, Nature photography, or is that subject?)
Photomechanical prints M-C
Photomontages M-C
Pictorial works deferred to art project per 185/155 working group
Picture books considered by Literature group and passed on to art project
Pictures LCSH has note: Here are entered works that discuss pictures themselves as objects of special interest, including their classification, cataloging, copying, printing, mounting, etc. Pictures that are representative of particular art media are entered under the medium, e.g. |a Painting; Engraving; |i etc. LCGFT already has Pictorial works as UF for Illustrated works (SC: one could interpret the note to mean that Pictures is topical rather than g/f)
Plans (Architecture) AAT = Refers to drawings, sketches, prints, computer graphics, or works in other media depicting a building or any object viewed from above, geometrically represented as projected on a horizontal plane. ...
Portraits deferred to art project per 185/155 working group
Posters included in General list; they had Ephemera as BT but dropped it; think about this
Possible NT: War posters, Theatrical posters, Film posters, Dance posters, Opera posters, Political posters, Public health posters, Safety Posters, Sports posters, Travel posters, Wanted posters (I checked with J.Y. and according to her, these are valid multiterms headings) M-C
Print-on-demand photobooks or does this get post-coordinated?
Prints (and types of prints, NTs, e.g., M-C suggests for planographic techniques: Screenprints, Lithographs, Nature prints, Collographs, Monoprints; for relief techniques: Wood engravings, Woodcuts, Linocuts, Stone engravings, and Relief prints to cover other less common such as plexiglass, styrofoam, cardboard engravings (+ embossed prints (suggested by a colleague)--MC); for intaglio techniques: Carborundum prints, Engravings, Drypoints, Mezzotints, Line engravings, Crayon manner prints, Etchings)
Renderings
reproductions/originals photographs, art reproductions, post-coordinate?, hybrid?
Sales catalogs (draft proposal sent to list)
Sculpture (AAT says that "sculpture" may apply to one or more works but does give Sculptures as UF)
Self-portraits deferred to art project per 185/155 working group
Self-published books came up at photobooks session in Fort Worth 2015
Selfies
Sketchbooks suggested by Maria - record drafted by Maria in message to CAC, March 2016
Sketches suggested by M-C; perhaps too artsy and "drawings" is enough (here, I'm predicting an LC issue of specificity) Liz notes potential ambiguity with music
spiral-bound books and other physical format things; are these in g/f scope? or another facet?
Technical drawings AAT = The broad class of drawings that are intended for constructional, mechanical, or mapping purposes and that follow precise conventions of scale and projection, including cross-sections, details, diagrams, elevations, perspectives, plans, etc., made for use in a technical context.
Textile art M-C
Typographic posters sugggested by Marie-Chantal for non-illustrated posters, broadsides, proclamations, official notices, etc. [particularly when they are visual] - broadsides appears in reference structure for Playbills in LCGFT
Video installations (Art) probably a hybrid that can be split (I would suggest Video art + Installations (Art)--MC; BB seconds M-C suggestion)
Video recordings already in LCGFT, check references
View paintings (vedute) noted on museum label
Viewbooks (M-C) AAT scope: Commercially published groups of photographs (substitute pictures, per M-C) of one (?) place, event, or activity (change to places, events, or activities), sometimes spiral bound or accordion folded. M-C notes that publishers call them “Views folders”, “Souvenir views folders” or “Post folders” (SC probably do UFs as View folders, Souvenir view folders, Post folders; "View books" would probably be confusing though scope note should clarify)
MCLC : What about "Souvenir pictures"? The term could then be used regarless of whether the images are presented in a volume, an envelope or a folder (just as we would use "Postcards" for postcard booklets)
Watercolors proposal sent to list, 26.iii.2016 sc
style and movement terms, e.g., baroque, experimental, neorealist, surrealist; are they genre?
archival terms: is this something in our purview?; my humble offerings from our own collections (BB): administrative records, clippings, memorabilia, realia, pamphlets, press kits, promotional materials, notes
MCLC : Several libraries have vertical files. I think clippings and press kits should be included. We already have Pamphlets (ephemera). Could memorabilia and realia be defined by other terms already in the list (I think there is something for souvenirs on the general list; perhaps natural objects as well?)?
